To: All Freight Forwarders, All Courier Agents The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned all cargo shipments of non-rechargeable lithium batteries aboard passenger flights to, from or within USA effective 29 December 2004.
Report shows that these batteries have caused several incidents in air transportation when transported in the cargo hold of passenger aircraft, posing fire hazards and are difficult to extinguish.
In conjunction with the ban, Malaysia Airlines have decided to prohibit the carriage of cargo shipments of all types of lithium batteries on its passengers' aircraft effective 3 January 2004. This includes UN3090 & UN3091 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
Cargo shipments of lithium batteries will however be permitted on all cargo flights. As a reminder, please obtain the latest, 46th Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations 2005 for your reference and compliance.
